Bell’s Hill Walk

The Silos weren’t the first tourist attraction in Waco.  Once upon a time we were known as “Geyser City” and people came from all across the country to take a dip in our “healthful waters.”  Learn all about Captain J. D. Bell, the man who discovered these waters, and wander around the neighborhood where he lived and worked.

On March 11, 1889, Captain J. D. Bell and his crew drilled in a rock formation in South Waco and sent a geyser of hot water spewing into the sky.  This gusher helped turn Waco into “Geyser City,” a booming tourist attraction and resort town for the next 20 years.

Bevil Cohn, former principal of Bell’s Hill Elementary, will lead the walk. Walkers should expect to cover about two miles.

Accessibility: Most of the walk will be on sidewalks and city streets, but you will need to be able to negotiate a few curbs and a few grassy patches.

Hydration: Please bring your own water.

Dogs: Doggies are welcome, but they MUST be on a leash and you MUST come prepared to scoop the poop! Dogs will not be allowed inside buildings.
